Released: 30 August 2004 Format: CD-R Length: 78:22 machine.records tenth release, Violence Is Its Own Reward, is the debut album from Cardiff’s Anatomist, previously heard on the 5-track Material Witness EP released in February of this year. With 12 new tracks clocking in at almost 80 minutes, Violence Is Its Own Reward juxtaposes twisted	breakfunk and decaying digital melodies to reveal a unique, cut-throat sound. Anatomist’s schizophrenic approach to leftfield electronica – by turns wistfully melodic and abrasive – reflects diverse influences ranging from the blues/soul singer Ted Hawkins to the sound-mangling techno of Surgeon and a misspent youth at 80’s acid house raves.

KRUGER: 'An accomplished journey in electronica awaits listeners of Anatomist's latest release on Machine Records.    'Following the well received EP 'Material Witness', this is an album that will draw similarities from many places, the crunchy soundscapes of Autechre to the more playful electronica of Plaid and the dreamy ambience of Boards of Canada, but there is no mistaking its individuality.    Like most albums of its kind, Violence Is Its Own Reward demands the proper attention of the listener to really get the most out of it, and it takes a couple of runs to appreciate all its subtleties, yet it is certainly less of a challenging listen	than some of the more abrasive electronica out there. Give it the time it deserves and you will feel happily pulled along for the ride, without the metal pushing and shoving required to get you there.    From the straining opening of 'Spinal Chord' come the crisp drums of 'Ockhams Razor' and 'Interfere'. Through the punchy breaks of 'Enamel' and the brass swells of 'Frostbite' comes the altogether dirtier landscape of 'Spasm' - peppered with its overdriven growls and cheeky strin 'n' Rhodes interludes.    Sit back, forget the ironing and listen. It's a rewarding experience. Just don't forget the travel sweets.'
